The Human Genetic and Cultural Evolution group at the University of Zurich invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Population Genomics, with a focus on the interplay between demography, genetic diversity, and the evolution and diffusion of languages and cultural traits. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team to investigate how ancient and modern human populations have influenced genetic and linguistic diversity.
Key Responsibilities
– Analyze large-scale genomic datasets, both newly generated and existing
– Participate in fieldwork and sample collection in Africa
– Model the relationships between genetic variation, migration, and cultural traits
– Address research questions concerning population structure, admixture, and their effects on genomes and languages
Eligibility And Requirements
– Strong academic background in population genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, or related disciplines
– Demonstrated interest in linguistic and cultural evolution
– Proficiency in English and effective communication skills
The position is supervised by Prof. Dr. Sílvia Rocha de Oliveira and is part of the Evolutionary Biology PhD Program at UZH, as well as the NCCR ‘Evolving Language’ Diversification Project, providing a stimulating interdisciplinary research environment.
