Overall Purpose

A successful Project / Technical Manager with Hill Robinson will be able to demonstrate significant experience and knowledge of Engineering systems, their maintenance and safety management practices on board large yachts and / or other relevant ships. The candidate will possess strong technical skills and have a drive to progress, as well as excellent administrative skills and financial acumen. Report writing and budget control is a key priority in this role.

As Technical manager, he will be the principal point of contact on all technical matters and provide emergency technical support. He will work closely with the Client Service Team composed of other fellow Fleet Yacht Managers and Finance Managers, as well as with the Compliance Department, and be responsible for overseeing the day to day technical requirements, handle insurance claims, perform or assist during ISM/ISPS/MLC Internal Audits on behalf of the Company, maintain yacht’s Class & Flag certification, attend onboard Class & Flag surveys for the yacht(s) under his responsibility.

As Project Manager, he will be responsible for planning and managing Refits. This includes but is not limited to, worklists and budgets making / presenting, shortlisting shipyards and contractors, contracts review and negotiating, on site supervision, progress reporting and managing crew and client’s expectations.

Responsibilities

Technical Support and Administration

  • Technical Management throughout the operational life of a fleet of Superyachts.
  • Provide Continuous support in the event of systems failure, spares procurement, and take part as and when necessary in the emergency response team coordination,
  • Provide general technical and commercial advice and guidance,
  • Drafting / Establishing and Monitoring yacht’s maintenance budgets in close cooperation with Yacht and Finance managers
  • Handle Yacht Insurance Claims of a technical and physical damage nature.
  • Provide regular, periodical technical reports to management and owners.
  • Liaise with Yacht Managers for the smooth running of the yachts.
  • Assistance to other departments (e.g. finance team with financial reports, budgets, fund requests, invoicing approvals, Owner Reports, Compliance Reports).
  • Physical attendance onboard the yachts will be required from time to time.
  • Actively participating in Technical Department and/or Compliance Department meetings and/or other company meetings in view to share and acquire knowledge and experiences, and assist in problem solving / troubleshooting as and when necessary

ISM – Compliance

  • Provide correct interpretation of Class Rules and other related regulations. Monitor survey schedules and liaise with Class and Flag surveyors, to plan maintenance work periods.
  • Promoting the effective use of the Planned Maintenance System, while ensuring it is updated with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), Class, Flag and management requirement
  • Working with the Compliance Managers and DPA in reviewing reported non-conformities and defects, analyzing and introducing measures to prevent reoccurrence
  • Undertaking internal audits onboard (for ISM Qualified Auditors) AND/OR perform Technical Inspections as part of the Internal Audits performed by the Compliance team, ensuring any items that may be raised during internal or external inspections are clearly reported and addressed in advance of Class or Flag audits or surveys
  • Provide continuous support in the event of system failures, spares and emergency response team coordination.
  • Review and comment on Monthly Compliance, Safety Meetings and Technical Reports as received monthly from the yachts.

REFIT - Management / Project Management

  • Compile refit specifications, shortlist suitable shipyards and manage the quoting process.
  • Negotiate prices, get client approval, record and report all savings to client.
  • Shipyard Contract, and T&Cs review and negotiate standard company amendments. Address any additional insurance requirements
  • Monitor and Control refit costs, quality and schedules, working directly with Finance & Yacht Managers for invoices review and approval.
  • Report and communicate anticipated cost over-runs and savings achieved, purchasing and spending thresholds, VAT, invoices and payments, client funds and funds requests
  • Refit status reporting – pre- refit, weekly or monthly updates, final reports.
  • Secure fleet discounts where available.
  • Extensive travelling during refit periods for onboard attendances and shipyard meetings will be required.

New Business

  • Identify new opportunities through captains, shipyards or other means where company technical services may be beneficial and promote cross-selling of Company’s services when the opportunity arises.
  • Negotiate Vendor / Contractor rates for the company and related fleet vessels.
  • Participate in boat shows and industry events as applicable.

Other

  • Knowledge and ability to perform Condition Surveys and Pre-Purchase surveys.

Person, skills, and knowledge Specification

10+ years experience in similar role within the yachting industry.

Ex- Chief Engineer on yachts (minimum Y3 level) and/or possess a Marine Engineering, Naval Architect or Mechanical Engineering.

Fluent in English.

Based in the Cote d’Azur with ability to travel frequently.
